Japan Earthquake Earth Change Axis, Rotation Speed

NASA said that the earthquake that struck Japan has shortened days on Earth a millionth of a second, or 1.8 mikrosecond.

In addition to shortening days on earth, Japan earthquake also claimed to have changed the Earth's axis of approximately 6.5 inches. Similarly, an additional statement from NASA, as quoted by USA Today, Wednesday (16/03/2011).

"By changing the distribution of planet masses, the quake also caused the Earth rotates more quickly," says Richard Gross, a scientist from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The quake also changed the position of the axis of the Earth. This change will cause changes in the Earth's rotational axis but did not cause the Earth's position in space, just like the strength of the gravitational power of the sun, moon and planets that can do that.

Gross said that the changes in Earth's mass is not a strange thing.

"Rotation of the Earth change over time, which not only caused by earthquakes, but also because of the effects of changes in wind and sea. During one year the length of day increases and decreases approximately one miliseken, or approximately 550 times greater than the change caused by the earthquake Japan, "explained Gross.

"The position of the axis of the Earth are changing all the time, with approximately 3.3 feet in a year, or approximately six times greater than the change caused by the earthquake Japan," added Gross.

Gross stated that changes in the Earth's rotational axis and will have no impact on daily life.

"Changes in the Earth's rotation is not unusual and happens all the time, people do not need to worry," explained Gross.
