Korean Peninsula Earthquake Shifted

Korean Astronomical Institute said that the Korean peninsula has shifted as far as 5 cm as the impact of the earthquake that shook Japan last week.

Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) said that based on data from global positioning system (GPS), the peninsula has been shifted from 1 to 5 cm depending on location. Ulleung Island and nearby islands of Dokdo in the East Sea is the most feel the impact of these shifts. Similarly, as quoted by The Hindu, Thursday (03/17/2011).

Ulleung Island and Dokdo is South Korean territory closest to the location of the earthquake that has devastated the northeastern part of Honshu Island last week.

While the southwest of the South Korean island of Jeju and shifted a little more. The quake's epicenter was 130 km east of Sendai city beneath the Pacific ocean.

"We will try to find out more details, whether the movement is directly related to an earthquake or something else,"said the KASI.

"This announcement is taken from data 11 GPS stations in South Korea," added the KASI.

KASI also said that Japan's own plate moves approximately 2 meters to the east due to the earthquake.
